Abdul kalam की शुरूआती जिन्दगी के बारे में बात करें तो यह सामान्य से भी कुछ कम थी क्योंकि कलाम ऐसे परिवार में पैदा हुए थेजंहा उनके माता पिता ज्यादा पढ़े लिखे नहीं थे 15 अक्टूबर 1931 को धनुषकोडी गाँव जो तमिलनाडु में स्थित हैमें एक मुस्लिम परिवार में जन्म लेने वाले APJ Abdul Kalam के पिता का नाम जैनुलाब्दीन था और वो खुद न तो अधिक पढ़े लिखे थेऔर ना ही उनके परिवार की आर्थिक हालत कुछ अधिक थीपरिवार में भी कलाम खुद पांच भाई बहन थे हालाँकि इतनी सीमित संसाधन होने के बाद भी परिवार के माहौलऔर पिता की मेहनत और लगन का कलाम के उस समय के जीवन और आने वाले समय पर बड़ा प्रभाव था

एपीजे अब्दुल कलाम-जी को बचपन से ही नई बातें सीखना अच्छा लगता था। उनके पिता एक जहाज बनाते थे। युवा अब्दुल कलाम ने उन्हें देखा और धातु और लकड़ी जैसे पदार्थों का अध्ययन किया। वह एक संपन्न परिवार से आते थे। लेकिन एक चक्रवात ने उन्हें मार डाला। चक्रवात और उनका परिवार पूरी तरह से परेशान हो गए। लेकिन सीखने की तीव्र इच्छा आपको सभी बाधाओं पर विजय दिलाती है। Abdul Kalam-ji केवल आठ वर्ष के थे, लेकिन उन्होंने पढ़ाई पर ध्यान दिया और अपने परिवार की मदद करने के लिए एक पेपर बॉय बन गए। सुबह चार बजे उठकर अखबार बाँटना चाहिए। वह बाकी दिन पढ़ाई करेगा। वह इतनी छोटी उम्र में बहुत उत्साहित था। स्कूल उसके लिए ज्ञान की खान थी। उन्होंने स्वयं स्नान किया पूरी कक्षा को पक्षियों की उड़ान सिखाने के लिए एक बार उनके शिक्षक समुद्र तट पर ले गए। वहाँ, उन्होंने उन्हें उड़ते हुए पक्षी दिखाए और बताया कि पक्षियों की उड़ान का विज्ञान क्या है।
